Green Tea Myths busted

Green Tea is the most sought after drink today, owing to the worldwide belief that it has the ability to shed the extra weight. Green Tea is made from unionized tea leaves which are laden with antioxidants called flavonoids a group of plant based chemicals which help reduce coronary infections.

  1. 1. Green Tea helps lose weight

The reason for its rising popularity is the belief that a drink would help reduce weight. Yes and No, green tea can help in reducing weight combined with a strict diet plan that does not include artificially flavored and sweetened beverages in addition to green tea intake.

Green tea has antioxidants that help in the process as it also discovers free radicals in cells of the body.  Just sipping a few cups a day would not do the trick as the metabolism stimulant in green tea is far too less to work the magic.

A proper diet regime and healthy diet with a workout is what it takes to lose weight. The BMR gets refined when the muscles form in place of the flab.

        2. Green Tea is caffeine free

Many move to Green Tea from Coffee with the hope that it is caffeine free and safe for our health. Truth be said, all types and brands of Green Tea do contain a hint of caffeine and are not 100% caffeine free.

          3. More the Green Tea, more the benefits

The hype that surrounds Green Tea has made people consume 5-6 cups a day and also call it the Green Tea detoxification. Actually speaking, stick to 1 cup of green tea after every meal and do not exceed 6 cups in a day.

Reason to restrain from heavy consumption of this natural drink is the fact that it is naturally caffeinated and should be consumed in moderation only.

   4. Green Tea is healthier without Milk and Sugar

That’s the standing truth milk overrides the health benefits of Green Tea and needs to be avoided. The 'casein' protein in milk does not react well with the Green Tea. Unsweetened Tea has better health benefits than sweetened and that applies to Green Tea also. However, Honey and Stevia are a good addition to people who have a sweet tooth.

   5. Green Tea can be consumed all through the Day

As mentioned earlier, a maximum of 6 cups is permissible and sticking to sipping one cup after each meal is good.

However, Naturopathy suggests a cup of Green Tea at 4 pm is the best for the human body.

   6. Green Tea prevents Cancer

The high levels of polyphenols in Green Tea help kill cancer cells and shunt their growth is a research finding. What level of Green Tea would bring about this is still unknown.

   7. Green Tea reduces LDL

Consuming Green Tea fights the LDL build up as it has antioxidants that prevents the oxidation of LDL and triglycerides and thereby keeping heart diseases at bay.

   8. Green Tea has anti-aging properties

Green Tea has the ability to find free radicals at the cell level and this protects and prevents tissue damage in the skin thus maintaining youthfulness in the skin level.

The topical application of green tea extract for this purpose needs more research to prove that the catechins in Green Tea also help protect skin from ultra violet rays damage.

   9. Green Tea is better than Black Tea

Both the Teas have the same proven benefits.  Green tea has Catechin and Kaempferol as antioxidants, black tea has Quercetin and Theaflavins.

However, black tea leaves are oxidized after they are picked and hence sweet in the flavor. The preparation methods are different in both teas.

   10.    Green Tea prevents Type 2 Diabetes

Green Tea can improve insulin sensitivity and a mild reduction in the sugar levels of a person.
